    Blogging

Blogging is a timeline of shared information. It is a conversation between one person and a wider, unknown audience. It is just as valid if the audience is the blogger alone. We Need Space to Think

This seems intuitive but what do we mean by it? What is Space? Space is the distance between one thing and another. Space is the distance between one time and another. The space can reduce the effect of noise. It raises the Signal to Noise Ratio. The more space the more distant the signal that can be heard.

Organising Digital Knowledge Across Multiple Systems

Digital knowledge comes at us in all forms and it can be a challenge to manage. This note describes how I manage information in my Personal Knowledge Management system. My system works when.. I am easily able to find something I’ve saved I am confident nothing important is missing Knowledge and Records It has taken many iterations of many systems to realise there is a difference between knowledge and records.

          Obsidian Sync

Obsidian Sync is a paid sync service from the developers of Obsidian. It is the most reliable sync solution I've found. Fix Uninitialized Sync Error This caused me all sorts of hell syncing across 3 systems. Each time I restarted Obsidian the sync was lost. The fix worked for me on Windows 10. This seems to be a rare error that we haven’t yet nailed down a pattern for.

            The Quantum Operating System

‘Quantum OS is my operating system which in no way suggests I am a computer. Rather, it is a set of notes that describe the rules and standards I have determined are best to manage my digital information as I see fit. CORE CONCEPT Organising Digital Knowledge Across Multiple Systems describes in detail where I store documents and how I organise them.

            Completed Things

Computer Games A list of computer games I’ve completed, added to as I complete them (which is pretty rare I must say compared to some people but which did have a decided uplift during COVID-19 lockdown in 2020). “Completion” means playing through the main story line but for some games, they are not possible to complete so if I’ve played what I think is a sufficient amount, they are listed here.

            Friday on my Mind

Week 2 of my experiment taking Friday’s off work. The first four weeks are annual leave but I hope to be able to move that to a permanent work arrangement thereafter. The goal is to allow me to relax and pursue that which makes my heart sing. My last blog entry My Wednesday blog entry generated a “Page Not Found” 404 error and may not have shown up in your feed.

              RSS Minefield

You make one simple change. A few days ago I reorganised blog posts into a YYYY/MM folder structure. Within the processing, this added a two ../ into the links because the articles have moved downwards two folders. Four months ago, I added code to .replaceAll("../", "quantumgardener.info/") which had the impact of providing a link that looks like this: quantumgardener.info/https://quantumgardener.info/https://quantumgardener.info/notes/obsidian and that clearly ain’t right.

                Reflections on my Note Taking

I’m conscious as I head into a period of more writing that my note taking isn’t very good, or at least my note viewing after I take them. I think I take reasonable notes. I’ve had a focus on the The NoMa Method which has improved my not taking, when I remember to do so. Notes are filed well. Notes will link using forward and backlinks in Obsidian.

                  The NoMa Method

The NoMa Method reminds me of the framework of questions used in a coaching conversation. ”NoMa” stands for Note Making, contrasted to Note Taking. I learned of it from Nick Milo. It’s similar because it is structured to pull out Distinctions and a way forward. It’s different because the focus is on note making and not inquiry into Way of Being.

                  The Quantum Garden

The Quantum Garden means two things. It refers to my Obisidan vault where I write and journal, and the online version of my Digital Garden at quantumgardener.info. For more on what that’s all about see Designing The Quantum Garden. quantumgardener.blog is historical and mapped to the same site. I may not renew it.

                    Now, 15 May 2024

There is a lot going on. Following my wife’s suggestion around Christmas, and after a lot of consideration, I’ve made a formal request to cut my work days from 5 to 4. Things haven’t been enjoyable for a while because I’ve not been busy and there is a catch-22 at play. The less busy I am, the worse I feel, but if I was fully busy I’d have hit my current burnout earlier.

                      Cities Skylines

I got into Cities Skylines during COVID and i played a lot of it. Something like 200 hours which puts it second behind Elite - Dangerous for overall game time. There is something I find compelling in layout out roads, zoning areas of development and then fixing all the problems I created.

                      IMatch to Socials

The IMatch to Socials system automates the addition, update and deletion of images between IMatch and flickr or pixelfed. I created it to reduce the time taken updating and managing photos across all three platforms. Features Uses metadata directly from the IMatch database and formats it (to my liking) for sharing with others.

                        Now, 3 May 2024

Today I posted the documentation on my IMatch to Socials project. It’s been somewhat of a labour of love over the past couple of months to write code that will automate the upload and update of images from IMatch to my flickr and pixelfed accounts. It’s the second best code that I’ve ever written and I’m proud of how elegant it is.

                          IMatch

IMatch is the software used to manage our family library of photos and videos called Mediabank. It has supported the family’s Photography in all forms for many years. I’ve owned every version since IMatch 3 over many years. It is a powerful digital asset management application. During that time the built-in features of the application have become more powerful and what I once needed scripting for, is now built-in.

                            Cities Skylines II

I’ve just begun playing the successor to Cities Skylines after building a PC that’s capable of playing it. I had been waiting for the PlayStation 5 version (still delayed) but won’t bother. My first city is a real mess. That’s deliberate. I’ve been learning the tools and mechanics. There are improvements; roads especially that make everything smoother to play with.

Calibre is a cross-platform eBook management tool. It allows you to manage the metadata present in your eBooks. I use Calibre because Digital Rights Management is Unhealthy and share the database with calibre-web because I like its interface better.

Whenever I’m asked what I would do if I didn’t have to work, I’ve answered, “I’d be a philosopher.” Those who know me nod in agreement and don’t question it. Although I know deeply intuitively this it the correct answer, I haven’t been able to articulate why. My Mission Statement defines me as a scholar of life seeking wisdom.
